Call for Presenters

DEN in SL is putting out a ‘Call for Presenters’.  Here’s your big opportunity to present virtually (imagine how THAT would look on a resume!)!

DEN in SL is looking for people to present at their convenience (remember, SL is a 24/7/366 world) on a topic of their choice.  If you need help narrowing the focus of a presentation we are currently looking for people who have been in-world for awhile and could present one of the travel topics, like “best science locations”, “best historical recreations”, “best architecture”, etc.  If you have compiled a few landmarks which you would like to share, these sessions could be simple - you would just talk about the landmarks you have and ask attendees if they have any to add, drop them all in a notecard giver and voila! everyone has the landmarks which they can go to and explore. The presenter could choose whether they wanted to tour with the group or not.

And remember, the DEN in SL will provide you with all the support you need to help you present in-world — from sending out notices of your event, to helping put together notecards, to being a ‘Vanna White’ and helping facilitate the logistics on the day of your presentation.

Book Talk on Wednesday, January 23rd

In case you’re wanting to join us on Wednesday, the book we will be discussing is ‘The Kids are Alright’ by John C. Beck.  It’s a great book that provides insight into our current student population, the gaming generation.  I’m sure you’ll experiencing many ‘aha’ moments as you read the book (I know I did!) and I hope you’ll join me so we can share our views and what we can do in education to meet the needs of the gaming generation.

PLEASE NOTE:  THE TIME HAS BEEN CHANGED FROM 5 P.M. SLT (8 P.M. EST) TO 6 P.M. SLT (9 P.M. EST)

It’s a Wrap - DEN in SL Webinar

Yes, ladies and gents!  The DEN in SL presented their FIRST webinar and if I might (humbly) say so myself — I think we did a great job.  We had a wonderful turnout, the LC council easily shared the mic (never thought that would happen! LOL) while Riptide managed the PowerPoint presentation.  I understand that there will be a transcript (recording?) of the event and as soon as I know, I’ll let you know where you can find it.  After the event, we met in-world at the DEN in SL headquarters for some socializing and some hands-on help.  I took Colemama Snook on a QUICK freebie shopping trip and replaced her newbie hair with something a little more becoming and managed to get her outfitted in some cool lilac sneakers to replace those newbie flip-flops.  She also learned how to open a box and copy its content to her inventory and how to put on a bald hair base so her hair will sit correctly on her head.  Yes, all in all a very productive evening!  Make sure to check out the Google Groups (and join if you haven’t yet) at http://groups.google.com/group/den-in-sl

It’s a Wrap - Gimme a Topic

Another Wednesday, another great ‘workshop’ at DEN in SL.  Tonight’s topic, facilitated by Celestia, was ‘Gimme a Topic’.  I loved the look of the DEN lobby where Cel had set up a seating arrangement comprised of all different types of chairs to represented the diversity in the DEN and the diversity in the topics we’re looking to offer.  This was a relaxed, informal gathering where the group had the opportunity to share the types of topics and events they would like to see the DEN in SL offer.  The attendees (particiapants? DENizens?) had some REALLY, REALLY great ideas.  No, I’m not going to share what was brought up…’cause we want to hear what YOU think…  That’s right!  In the comments below why don’t you share what you would like to see offered.  And remember, if you would like to present (whether formally or informally) DEN in SL would LOVE to help facilitate that and will offer whatever services we can to help make that happen.  Remember, we are our own best resource!  So click on that ‘Comment’ button and share some things that you would like to see the DEN in SL do, you are only limited by your imagination….think in terms of RL and SL topics, think in terms of time and space, think in terms of workshops or field trips or….

It’s a Wrap - Presenting in SL

One of the aspects that makes Second life a valuable tool for educators is the ability to collaborate and share with others.  Presentations can cover a wide range of topics, from how to motivate a reluctant reader to how to use portfolios to tips for teaching fractions.

Beth Kohnke and JuliaAnn Mills did a fabulous job on ‘Presenting in SL’, the Wednesday Workshop held on January 9th.  The workshop began in the SandBox where our Island Manager, Fleet (a great, wonderful, supportive, individual), had set up some rows of theater style lounge seating.  We quickly filled up and I dragged some cushions out of my Inventory to accommodate the additional attendees.  (Note: Having a partner while presenting helps facilitate the logistics (addressing chat questions, setting up additional seating, etc.).  In preparing your in-world presentation you will need to first think about what you need — slides, movies, or handouts which are called notecards in Second Life.  Second, you need to decide if you will use chat (text), voice, or a combination of both.  If you choose to use voice, it is a good idea to let people know ahead of time that you are using voice so they can enable voice in their preferences.  If you decide to use chat you may want to use a SpeakEasy HUD where you can type in your presentation line-by-line.  As the presenter, you ‘wear’ this HUD and as you are ready to present you click on the icon and the first line of your presentation appears.  Click again and the next line appears and so forth.

Once you have decided to present and your presentation is designed you’ll need to promote your presentation via social networks (Twitter, blogs, Ning, etc.).

Plan for time – 15 minutes prior and up to ½ hour afterwards to address any questions

One tool to be used for presentations is a Communal Whiteboard which allows you to present a slideshow (ala PowerPoint/Keynote).  You upload your slides as jpegs (cost of L$10 per image) and they are saved in your Textures folder in your Inventory.  NOTE:  You’ll want to name your slides numerically or alphabetically to allow for easy ordering in the whiteboard.

The workshop then moved to DEN in SL HQs.  Attendees teleported to the 2nd floor of DEN to view the Media Player (I in the meantime was still attempting to get a decent group shot, got myself ‘stuck’ in a wall and by the time I got out everyone was gone from the SandBox.  I had a fleeting moment of panic as I imagined that SL had crashed on us! LOL).  This part of the workshop focused on using the Media Player as another option for sharing information in-world.

You can see the full transcript of the workshop in the ^Files^ area of the Google Group.

Remember, we encourage you to contribute to DEN in SL – please consider offering a workshop in the near future.  And remember, we’re here for you and will assist you in any way we can.

Tomorrow is DEN in SL’s FIRST WebEx
