Gentle Reminder - October 27th

Always wanted to attend a Book Group, but just were never able to find the time, location, group?  Here’s an opportunity for you to join this virtual Book Group from the comfort of your own home!

Join Beth and Laelia for ‘Book Talk: Brain Rules’, a weekly (every Monday) gathering for the month of October as we discuss, share, and debate the merits of John Medina’s ‘Brain Rules’.  This evening we will cover chapters 10 - 12.  Taken from the Brain Rules website (www.brainrules.net): “Most of us have no idea what’s really going on inside our heads. Yet brain scientists have uncovered details every business leader, parent, and teacher should know—like the need for physical activity to get your brain working its best. How do we learn? What exactly do sleep and stress do to our brains? Why is multi-tasking a myth? Why is it so easy to forget—and so important to repeat new knowledge?”  Join us as we explore in depth the concepts in each chapter and how we can change what we do in our schools and in our classes to enable our students to learn better.

This is the final of four sessions on John Medina’s book, ‘Brain Rules’.

BOO!

That’s right…’BOO!’  DEN in SL is once again hosting a Halloween Extravaganza.  We hope you’ll be able to join us, tomorrow, 12 p.m. SLT (2 p.m. CST, 3 p.m. EST).  For those of you who are in need of a last minute costume, there’s a box of goodies over at the DEN in SL.  You can also check out Awesome Designs for more inspiration.

Between now and next Friday I would STRONGLY encourage you to head over to Octoberville.  This is the 4th year the sim has put together an amazing Halloween affair, and one I would not want to miss!

If you have any additional places you would like to recommend for costumes, please post them in the ‘Comments’ section below.  Thanks.

It’s a Wrap - Going Green 102: Green Schools

It was a beautiful Autumn afternoon at the DEN in SL garden. We sat around a campfire on haystacks and listened to Faythe Fouroux (aka Melanie Ruiz) give an informative presentation on how we as educators, can be role models for helping to reduce our carbon footprint and help create green classrooms and schools. Ideas included turning off lights, recycling crayons, pencils and paper, and changing how we get to school whether it be hybrid cars, car pooling, or walking.  Faythe shared a notecard filled with websites like Planet Green and Carbon footprint calculators to help us learn more about why we need to be conscious of conserving energy and being more green.  Look for the notecard and her slideshow in our google group files section. And of course teleport over to some Green places in SL like Etopia at http://slurl.com/secondlife/Etopia%20Prime/199/40/36 and Faythe’s own The Going Green Store  http://slurl.com/secondlife/Axenfall/222/215/65

Mark Your Calendar - October 15th

The original workshop for this Wednesday, OneNote, has been moved to November and in its place we have ‘Going Green 102: Green Schools’ presented by Faythe Fouroux.  Most of us understand the basics of what we need to do to
lead greener lives, but do we understand what we need to do to teach in greener classrooms?  This presentation will cover how you can make some green choices in your classroom and what programs are available to help you go green at school.

SLT TIME:  5 p.m. SLT (7 p.m. CST, 8 p.m. EST)

It’s A Wrap - The Virtual Pioneers- Exploring History Through Virtual Worlds

Wowie kazowie! If you weren’t able to join us last night, you missed a great presentation that included field trips to places in Second Life that I have never seen before. Spiff Whitfield introduced many of us to The Virtual Pioneers. They are a group located on sim Lighthouse Learning in the Wnyric building. They focus on sites in Second Life that have historical realism. Whether it is accuracy in a sturctural layout or plan to role playing during a historical period, they have what must be the master list. We’re talking SOCIAL STUDIES in capital letters. We only stopped at a few places on a very big list of places. I, myself can’t wait to get back in and explore more of these places plus many of them had excellent freebie period costumes. Perfect for the DEN’s upcoming Costume Party at the end of the month.
