picake.jpg Happy Pi Day and Happy Birthday Albert Einstein!  Mathematicians around the world will celebrate Pi today.  Pi is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter.

Activity 1:  Measure the diameter of a cookie, a lifesaver, a smartie candy, and the paper plate they rest on.  Once you find diameter, calculate circumference.  Write a ratio for each item comparing the circumference and the diameter.  Simplify it or divide to confirm Pi; 3.14 or 22/7.

What is PI?  http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6200593424291031420&hl=en

Activity 2:  Create music to the digits to PI or complete a scavenger hunt  (HOMEWORK)  Comment on my blog about either of the activites you’ve completed for Saturday – PI DAY!!!!!

LCM/GCF

Posted by Shannon Johnson under Math, Problem Solving

I know you’ve all been practicing LCM and GCF in your math classes so for more practice and to integrate problem solving use the following link to use LCM and GCF to solve word problems.  Use your notebook to number your solutions and show ALL work!  Then enter your answers into the space provided on the website.  Submit solutions when finished and redo any problems you solved incorrectly in your notebook.

This will be an Internet based Webquest requiring you to investigate various shapes, their properties, and how they exist in the real world.  Later in the week, you will display your findings using Animoto!!!

webquest2shapes1.doc

Step 1:  Identify the shape assigned to you.  What is it made of and what are its characteristics?

Step 2:  Define a shape.  Click here to find information.  http://www.alifetimeofcolor.com/study/g_shape.html

Step 3:  Investigate Shapes!  Click here to read about various geometric shapes.  http://www.alifetimeofcolor.com/play/lineshape/shapes.html

Step 4:  Explain how to calculate area and perimter of your assigned shape.  You can use the following link to help.  http://www.shodor.org/interactivate/activities/AreaExplorer/?version=1.6.0_10&browser=MSIE&vendor=Sun_Microsystems_Inc.

Step 5:  Real World Connection – The shapes in every day life.  Explore!

Circles http://coe.west.asu.edu/students/cindelicato/circles.html

Squares  http://coe.west.asu.edu/students/cindelicato/squares.html

Triangles  http://coe.west.asu.edu/students/cindelicato/triangles.html

Ovals  http://coe.west.asu.edu/students/cindelicato/ovals.html

          (area) – http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_area_of_oval

Diamonds  http://coe.west.asu.edu/students/cindelicato/diamonds.html

Step 6:  Find your own photos of your assigned shape.  In the end, you should have atleast 10 pictures saved to your documents.  When saving your first image, right click and select ”save as.”  Select MyDocuments and then create a new folder called “Problem Solving Animoto” using the folder with a star icon at the top.  Your photos should show your shape and your shape in the “real world.”  You will also be writing text to describe area, perimeter, and characteristics of the photos you’ve saved.  We will do the animoto TOGETHER!  Yahooooooo!!!!!!
