Welcome to the Media Challenge!

Discovery Education announces the inaugural Discovery Education Student Media Challenge! Following the tradition set by student media festivals nationwide, the Challenge wants work from students in DEN classrooms! Kindergarten through high school are welcome to compete. The Challenge is not just about making media with cameras–it is about making media with downloads. Discovery Education and the Discovery Channel are supplying media material for students to download, re-edit, mash up, and make their own. Students must begin with the media material supplied. They then must mix in their own original work–and only their own original work. It is a level playing field for everyone! Creativity and knowledge will determine the winners.

Making the Earth a Better Place

The theme of the Challenge is Making the Earth a Better Place. Our planet is under pressure like never before. Maybe you can make a video that will change people’s behavior. Nothing has power to move minds like video.

How to Take the Challenge

Go to the Registration page. Follow the instructions there. You will be given a passcode. Once you have the passcode, you will find your own page on the media site.  There you will download the media from Discovery you will need to build your project. There are video clips, music clips, and still images from the Discovery Channel library and from Discovery Education streaming. Make your video by using these clips and adding your own original work. You may add narration, music, images, drawings, graphs, video and whatever else you feel will support your project. When you are finished, you will upload the project from your page and it will be judged online.

You can use the software tools below or any other programs you like to create your project for the Challenge.

  • PhotoStory
  • iMovie
  • MovieMaker
  • iPhoto
  • Adobe Premiere Elements

Everything you add you must create yourself. Give credits for everything you add to the media that Discovery provided. If you created it, give yourself credit.

When you are finished, upload your project to the Challenge site. Begin by registering here. Instructions and everything you need are there.

Rules and Releases

Go to these pages to learn the rules and to get the forms you will need.

Important Note! If you use anyone in your video, or their voice, or their artwork, you must get a signed release form from them. We have give you the release form and the information on where to send it. This is very important if Discovery chooses to share your video with the world.
