Have you spent hours creating your PowerPoint presentation just the way you wanted to only have to use it on a different PC that did not have the same version or different fonts?
If you have Adobe Pro or a different PDF converter you can save your PowerPoint as a PDF. However, if you do not have either of those you can still save as a PDF. Go to the Save As option and select Find Add-ins for other file formats. Click on the Install and use the Save as PDF or XPS add-in from Microsoft option. You will have a link where you can install the add-in. Once the add-in you will have the option to Save-As PDF or XPS.
Once you have your PowerPoint saved as a PDF you can open it on any PC that has Adobe Reader. Select View, Full Screen (Ctrl + L) and you can view just like a Power Point slide show. Granted you will not have animation or slide transitions, but you will have the correct fonts, colors, and themes.
Yes, Discovery Educators have made themselves know on Web 2.0 tools. After all, call them social networking tools, so certainly the Discovery Educator Network folks ought to be using, connecting, and learning on these tools. A few web 2.0 places to find DEN and the Texas DEN are:

On FaceBook:
Name: Discovery Educator Network

So, come on! Explore the World (Wide Web 2.0)!
I’m still very bummed about not getting to go to the DEN LC Institute this year or the Pre-Conference. (We’re training here all week.) I fully expect the DENsters to post lots of Tweets and Blog posts about these events so that we can all continue to benefit from such gatherings of educational technology leaders! But, I do have my suitcase out and am excited about meeting up with DENsters from across the country during NECC 2009.
The National Educational Computing Conference is in it’s 30th year and will be gathering in Washington DC starting this weekend. Many teachers, IT support staff, administrators and gurus will hit the conference ready to share and learn from each other. I thought it may be a good time to share some links that may make the preparations a little more easy. Or, if you won’t be going, some links to help keep you connected to the events and learning opportunities from the premier technology conference.
http://www.isteconnects.org/ The home of the 30th Annual National Educational Computing Conference with current info links, social network links, and the planning tool links. Click over to the NECC09 pages where you can see the program and the conference planner tool (http://tinyurl.com/lkb8wu).
http://www.neccning.org/ The Ning is already popping! There are tons of posts already from presenters and attendees alike. What a great way to get ideas for what to do while there or a nice connection to learn from others who are there.
http://twitter.com/isteconnects And for the Twitter crowd, 140 characters of updates from the NECC crowd. Use the hashtag, #NECC09 to get your tweets included in the flow.
http://wunderground.com And why not include a quick look at the weather via wunderground.com? It’s really one of my favorite sites for looking at weather in the classroom. When you have a good 20 or more minutes to kill, click through to their WunderMap. SO many options for looking at live weather data.
Have fun with these NECC tools whether you get to go or not. If you are there, look for other DENsters. They are almost always a good bunch to learn with. Have fun and safe travels!
As we all wrap up the end of the school year, isn’t it great that we don’t have to see the end of great DEN events? Some of you will be going to the DEN National Institute, others like myself, will be going to the DEN LC Symposium. Many lucky people will be going to the NECC pre-con and other fabulous regional events throughout the summer.
Give a shout out and tell us where you are going this summer, whether it be DEN related or not, and if you are interested in being a guest blogger this summer, send me an email at eplybon@gmail.com.
What? We just finished another great TCEA! Yes, the call for participation for TCEA 2010 is now open. TCEA 2010 is entitled “Charting New Waters” and submission of proposals is open until May 8. It’s time to be thinking about what session(s) you’d like to present and get those proposals turned in!
Visit TCEA’s website for more information.
If you’ve been watching the announcements from the Discovery Education team about what is in store for 2009, you’ve been blown away by their commitment to making the DEN stronger than ever, with more resources, more educators, and more activities that will enhance student success in all of our classrooms. Continuing long-standing programs (national institute), changing existing programs (rolling educator resources into DE Media Share), introducing new programs (DEN Guru, LC Symposium and retreats), and making the products available to us even stronger than before (have you looked at DE Science lately?), the DE team has really set the standard for establishing a strong, useful community of educators all over the world.
Just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, Discovery Education announced on the National Blog that they are beginning a new program called Discovery Student Adventures. Discovery has a long history of focusing on educators, now they will begin a new life with students at the forefront. This program will officially launch in 2010, but here’s the really exciting news - Discovery will be sending 9 lucky STARs and 36 students on a trip in 2009 as a pilot for the program and it will be free! Be sure to watch the National Blog for more details as they are made available.
Thank you, Discovery, for being an innovator in community building among educators!
After a great Day of Discovery in Austin, eight teachers have joined the ranks of the STAR DEN Educators. We are very happy to recognize these teachers for their effort in supporting a rich curriculum that takes advantage of the technology tools our students are learning to use in and out of the classroom. Welcome, Y’all! New STARs include: Shelley May, Amy Martin, Andrew Lyon, Rebecca Mullan, Joy Poole, Ava Prater, Peggy Perkins, and Claudia Bedoya.
A few of our great teachers were caught in front of the camera on the 6th of December. For a nice video about our Day of Discovery, visit: http://blog.discoveryeducation.com/hmartinman .
Guest Blogger and Texas LC member: Howard Martin
Texas Leadership Council member, Ann Jablonski, sent me a note today about a great idea for this holiday season. Here’s what she had to say:
“Something cool that Xerox is doing
If you go to this web site, http://www.letssaythanks.com/Home1280.html you can pick out a thank you card and Xerox will print it and it will be sent to a soldier that is currently serving in Iraq . You can’t pick out who gets it, but it will go to some member of the armed services.
How AMAZING it would be if we could get everyone we know to send one!!! This is a great site. Please send a card. It is FREE and it only takes a few minutes.(Plus your students get to practice their letter writing skills in a purposeful way.)
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the soldiers received a bunch of these? Our guys and gals over there need to know we are behind them…”
How hard would it be to run over to the site now and send a soldier a card? How about having all your students send one?
