Did You Know?

Have you spent hours creating your PowerPoint presentation just the way you wanted to only have to use it on a different PC that did not have the same version or different fonts?

If you have Adobe Pro or a different PDF converter you can save your PowerPoint as a PDF. However, if you do not have either of those you can still save as a PDF. Go to the Save As option and select Find Add-ins for other file formats. Click on the Install and use the Save as PDF or XPS add-in from Microsoft option. You will have a link where you can install the add-in. Once the add-in you will have the option to Save-As PDF or XPS.

Once you have your PowerPoint saved as a PDF you can open it on any PC that has Adobe Reader. Select View, Full Screen (Ctrl + L) and you can view just like a Power Point slide show. Granted you will not have animation or slide transitions, but you will have the correct fonts, colors, and themes.

New STARS, New Event, New Year!

Welcome back to school everyone! This is starting to look like one of the more exciting years yet with the Texas DEN. Please keep coming back to the blog this year as we will be keeping it more current throughout the year with the help of several Leadership Council Bloggers. Stay with us as we share new resources, DEN news, and event announcements.

New STARS
Please welcome new Texas DEN STARS that have joined during this summer. Give a big TX DEN Howdy to: Senyda Elizondo (Pharr), Ana Centeno (Glenn Heights), Pam Donze (Flower Mound), Angela Conrad (Kingwood), Linda Cross (Tuscola), and Sylvia Basaldu (Corpus Christi).

New Event: Texas DEN Photo Walk 2009
The TX DEN Leadership Council is organizing a great opportunity for the amateur and dangerously talented teacher photographers in the state. On September 12th, several cities will have small groups of teachers enjoy a Photo Walk, where the group will travel together taking pictures that support the day’s theme. Each city will gather afterwards for lunch and select their three favorite photos of the morning with each winner getting a prize that day.  For more fun, each site will upload their top three photos for a state-wide contest with bigger prizes for the top three photos.

The event is free and open to all in the Texas DEN. Come back soon for more registration details, but keep the morning of the September 12th open!
Happy New (Academic) Year!
From all of us on the Texas Leadership Council, we hope you have a fantastic and successful year.

Getting Ready For NECC 2009?

I’m still very bummed about not getting to go to the DEN LC Institute this year or the Pre-Conference. (We’re training here all week.)  I fully expect the DENsters to post lots of Tweets and Blog posts about these events so that we can all continue to benefit from such gatherings of educational technology leaders!  But, I do have my suitcase out and am excited about meeting up with DENsters from across the country during NECC 2009.

The National Educational Computing Conference is in it’s 30th year and will be gathering in Washington DC starting this weekend. Many teachers, IT support staff, administrators and gurus will hit the conference ready to share and learn from each other.  I thought it may be a good time to share some links that may make the preparations a little more easy. Or, if you won’t be going, some links to help keep you connected to the events and learning opportunities from the premier technology conference.

http://www.isteconnects.org/    The home of the 30th Annual National Educational Computing Conference with current info links, social network links, and the planning tool links. Click over to the NECC09 pages where you can see the program and the conference planner tool (http://tinyurl.com/lkb8wu).

http://www.neccning.org/  The Ning is already popping! There are tons of posts already from presenters and attendees alike. What a great way to get ideas for what to do while there or a nice connection to learn from others who are there.

http://twitter.com/isteconnects   And for the Twitter crowd, 140 characters of updates from the NECC crowd.  Use the hashtag, #NECC09 to get your tweets included in the flow.

http://wunderground.com  And why not include a quick look at the weather via wunderground.com?  It’s really one of my favorite sites for looking at weather in the classroom.  When you have a good 20 or more minutes to kill, click through to their WunderMap. SO many options for looking at live weather data.

Have fun with these NECC tools whether you get to go or not.  If you are there, look for other DENsters. They are almost always a good bunch to learn with.  Have fun and safe travels!

Media Libraries in DE

I went to a workshop Tuesday on creating media libraries using DE, the assignment builder, and other online resources to support curriculum.  We were encouraged to find video, audio, articles, etc in DE that fit a particular subject, then add websites, gather them all in an assignment builder item, and post link.  The libraries built this way could then be posted as links say on a wiki for teachers and students to use.

What ideas might you have for libraries built this way?  What subjects would you want to see?
