Just when you think the DEN can’t get any better. We are proven wrong. I know you all probably received this information, but the information is so exciting I had to post again. DEN Gurus are here! Check out the post below.
In the past four years the Discovery Educator Network (DEN) has grown in many different ways including the variety of ways educators may participate in the community. You can be a Discovery Educator and participate in the online community. You can apply to become a STAR Discovery Educator and engage in both online and in-person activities. And STARs who want to shape the direction of the community can apply to become part of the DEN Leadership Councils. So, what is next?
It goes without saying that within the DEN community we have an overabundance of talent. Every STAR has his/her own special talents, skills and passion for utilizing digital content across the curriculum. We want to continue to provide opportunities for STARs to share their knowledge with the community so we are pleased to announce another membership level – DEN Gurus.
DEN Gurus are STAR Discovery Educators who possess expertise of one or more pedagogical topics (e.g., Differentiated Instruction, Project Based Learning, etc.), have demonstrated their expertise through a variety of professional experiences, and advocate for the meaningful integration of Discovery Education digital content across their area(s) of expertise.
DEN Gurus will be promoted throughout the community as thought leaders in the educational field and have the opportunity to share their expertise in a variety of ways.
DEN Gurus will:
- be featured as regular contributors to the National DEN blog
- present their own featured DEN webinar
- represent the DEN at a major educational conference during the year (registration and travel expenses covered by the DEN)

Spring Into Action at the DEN Virtual Conference!
Saturday, April 25, 2009
9 AM to 3 PM (EDT)
Register Today!
Spring Into Action with the DEN and join thousands of educators who are passionate about integrating media into their instruction and collaborating with each other to improve student achievement. During this unique (and free) professional development event you have the flexibility to attend online or in-person at one of many regional events hosted by the DEN Leadership Councils.
The day will feature a special presentation from Chris Lehmann, Principal of the Science Leadership Academy in the School District of Philadelphia. Entitled Building School 2.0, Lehmann’s presentation will examine ideas of constructivist pedagogy and the use of 21st century tools to create schools that are engaging, caring and relevant places of learning for everyone involved.
In addition, you will have the opportunity to learn alongside the DEN team through presentations from Hardin Daniel, Brad Fountain, Matt Monjan and Lance Rougeux. The day will also include two special presentations featuring projects, ideas and tips from STAR Discovery Educators.
More information can be found on the National Blog.

There are two great things happening that we want to make you aware of. The first is that next Wednesday, April 9th at 11 am est DEN will be hosting a webinar for teachers and students featuring America’s Army and the Rise of the Video Games. It will be a really exciting webinar for everyone, especially students, so please spread the word. Please read the blog post to learn more about it.
The second is that it’s Spring Training. While you can only root for your favorite baseball team (GO SOX!!!), you can play for the DEN team. This year the DEN coaches are scouting talent for the All-STAR team as well as looking for some new prospects to join the DEN squad. You have a couple ways to impress the coaches during DEN Spring Training and earn some DEN gear.
1. Renegotiate Your Contract
2. Recruit a Rookie
3. Help Your Region Win the Pennant
4. Help Your State Win a Chance to Meet a Real “Hall” of Famer
Check out the National Blog for more information on how you can join the All-STAR team.

On October 24, 2007 I had the chance to attend a wonderful fundraising event. Animal Planet teamed up with the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) to host the Cheetah Conservation Fundraising Benefit. CCF is an internationally recognized center of excellence in research and education on cheetahs and their ecosystem. It was a very eye opening event for me. I didn’t realize that there are only about 10,000 cheetahs on earth. Through the DEN blog I was lucky enough to be one of two people to respond to the invitation. I sent and all call out to my staff and first grade teacher Sara Costa joined me as my guest. Sara is a huge fan of cheetahs was so excited to attend.
The event featured Dr. Laurie Marker, Founder & Director of CCF, Kago a Columbus Zoo Cheetah, wine, hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction. I think I personally saved a cheetah with the amount of items I won during the silent auction. Discovery/Animal Planet was well represented at the event. They donated several items for the silent auction, including a whole Meerkat gift basket and poster (I believe I even saw Meerkat soap).
The highlight of the evening of course was getting to see a real cheetah up close and personal. Kaigo had a previous engagement but Kago filled in. Kago is a cheetah ambassador and travels around the country to raise awareness. In fact Kago and his handlers were on the Hill earlier that day.
Please take a look at the slide show below, it was made with a great web 2.0 tool called Moonk. Thanks to VA DEN Chair Katie for sending it to me. Katie saw it used on the TN DEN Blog. You can choose a slide show, video or jukebox. Each comes with different skins.
Thanks to Scott Kinney and Discovery for another awesome opportunity. If you have a moment please check out the CCF site and read about their efforts. You can even help sponsor a cheetah that can no longer care for itself.
