The folks in Silver Spring have been busy making some changes and updates to DE Streaming. If you would like to learn more about these changes check out the National Blog for Webinar Information. I already had a sneak peek and it looks good.
A STATEWIDE DAY OF REMEMBRANCE IN HONOR OF VIRGINIA TECH VICTIMS

Governor Timothy M. Kaine is calling for a day of remembrance today, Wednesday, April 16, 2008, to honor those lost one year ago at Virginia Tech. All state flags are flown at half-staff for the day and he asks for a statewide moment of silence at noon followed by a statewide tolling of bells.
Governor Kaine will attend the university convocation tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m. on the Drillfield at Virginia Tech. The convocation webcast information, as well as a list of other events, is available at http://www.remembrance.vt.edu/.
Virginia Stars
As you all know, we launched our Spring DEN Promotion? Since it is spring time, and the Nationals and Orioles have already started to crack their bats, we thought we’d do the same with our DEN STARs!
You guys are part of the Mid-Atlantic Region team - the very best team in all the land. Right now we are in a tight pennant race with the other regions from around the country - and guess what…we’re winning! Check out our progress by clicking here. You can read more about our team by checking out the DEN Spring Training 2008 blog. And, even better, leave a comment to root the team on!
To help us continue our winning streak I need your help. Please make sure that you log into www.discoveryeducation.com and visit the Discovery Educator website. Then, if you haven’t had a chance to record your event make sure you do so.
But, even better, make sure that you help sign up three or more of your colleagues to become DEN STARs. We blew everyone out of the water last week but this week my colleagues have been talking lots of trash - I want to leave them no opportunity to do that next week - that’s right - No more Mr. Nice Guy - other regions
Let’s talk some smack back!

The LIVE GREEN Teacher Grant program, a Discovery Education program presented by General Motors, challenges middle school teachers to develop innovative ideas for furthering environmental and energy sustainability. Teachers will identify an issue or problem, create a plan to address it, and integrate the topic into classroom teaching.
Earn a $1,000 LIVE GREEN grant - 40 grants will be awarded to teachers for the most forward-thinking ideas. In addition, the 40 recipients will be treated to an exciting online professional development program designed to help them reach their school’s specific green initiatives, including a free digital camera to document and share the experience!

I going to start this post at the end of the day. As I was walking around the exhibit hall yesterday I came across these pirates. Now I don’t know about you, but I don’t expect to find pirates at NECC. These pirates were part of TurningPoint Audience Response System’s Booth.
With 100% PowerPoint® integration,
TurningPoint delivers immediate interactive response functionality to
students and teachers. Using this powerful educational technology tool,
teachers can evaluate the collective understanding of the entire class,
conduct formative assessments, and track individual student learning at
the point of instruction. TurningPoint interactive questions
can be used for assigning participation points, grading tests, as well
as tracking student performance against "No Child Left Behind"
standards. Educators can also create and run reports for virtually all of their classroom needs; from individual student participation scores to entire classroom results.
After listening to how the response system worked I was given two gold coins. I was able to turn those coins in for a chance to win a prize. Luckily my colleague Wendy and I won VIP passes. At 4:30, TurningPoint whisked us away from the convention center in a stretch Hummer Limo. We arrived at a trendy hotel where we took the elevator to a rooftop deck. There we were treated to cocktails, appetizers and a fabulous view of downtown Atlanta. Check out TurningPoint because they definitely know how to treat educators.
Discovery Educator Network
has decided to join other Virginia Tech families across the country who have
united to declare this Friday, April 20th, an “ Orange and Maroon Effect” day
to honor those killed in the tragic events on campus Monday, and to show support
for Virginia Tech students, faculty, administrators, staff, alumni, and
friends. To support those effected, the color scheme of all DEN blogs
will be changed to orange and maroon from Friday-Monday. We encourage you to leave comments, messages of support or any general thoughts.
Sincerely,
The VA Leadership Council
Most readers of this blog will be either teachers with a high level of interest in integrating technology or Instructional Technology Resource Teachers. With that in mind, I wanted to start the blogging with other Virginia educators talking about some useful ways to use United Streaming to produce interactive activities for students. I often create graphic organizers using Inspiration that contain United Streaming Clips. Students complete these organizers using the information contained in the linked videos. Another favorite use of United Streaming Videos is to inbed them in interactive lessons in a lesson builder program such as Soft Chalk Lesson Builder. This program allows you to create interactive websites with text, video, questions, crosswords, etc, and at the end, students reaching a certain level of mastery can print a certificate with their score. I look forward to hearing of how others use United Streaming in replies to this blog post.
