WI Day of Discovery

Denis_sullivan Day of Discovery Scheduled for Saturday, June 9th

Promoting Environmental Education Through the Development of Visual Literacy Skills

Come explore the concept of visual literacy and see how it can be used with scientific investigation.  The day will be spent learning how to use digital photography on the tall ship S/V Denis Sullivan and exploring the new tool Discovery Education Science Connection (DESC). The S/V Denis Sullivan looks like a 19th century ship, but operates with a 21st century mission: to inspire people of all ages to explore our freshwater world. DESC is the groundbreaking new middle school supplemental science resource that blends interactive, inquiry-based content together with formative assessment to help middle school educators tailor instruction to different learning styles. This day of Discovery will look at using photodocumentation and DES to view an ecosystem in a non-traditional manner.

Spend the morning on the S/V Denis Sullivan gathering data with the digital camera and looking at this unique 21st Century Classroom.  Spend the afternoon discussing photodocumentation and the Discovery Education Science Connection.

Reflections: September 23 Day of Discovery at Discovery World

Discover… explore… inspire!  Cimg2294_2
That sums up the activity going on in the new jewel on Lake Michigan’s downtown Milwaukee shore on Saturday, 9-23-06 for 68 Wisconsin and 3 Illinois educators - at least 50% DEN members - 100% having fun, collaborating and meeting new friends.  We had an inspirational team of talented presenters, four of whom are WIDEN members (Rita Mortenson and Deb Breunig & Dale Basler & Brian Bartel) and five DEN staff (Scott Kinney, Brad Fountain, Steve Dembo, Linda Chiles, & Dick Marchessault) and Implementation Team Member, Blair McMillen on hand.  Stephanie Waite, Park HS-Racine Science Teacher, provided continuous assistance throughout the event. The pictures tell the REAL story… we connected, we collaborated, we explored, we laughed, and as Jeri Shumaker (School District of Oregon Computer Resource Teacher) said it BEST…we feel RE-ENERGIZED!

Be sure to also check out Rita Mortenson’s awesome event album at

which also includes our end of the day special group photo taken in the Digital Theater. Thanks to Rita for taking time to provide a wonderful photo journal of the day!
