DEN Poster Contest FAQ

The DEN National Poster Contest is underway and many students have already started their designs.  Below is a list of questions (and answers) that may help eliminate any confusion.  If you have anything to add, please post a comment or email me.

Q: Who can participate?
A: Any K-12 student whose teacher is a Discovery Educator.

Q: When is the deadline for submissions?
A: All entries must be received by Saturday, December 17, 2005 at 5 PM (Local Time Zone).

Q: Is there a theme for the poster designs?
A: Poster designs must be one or more of the following: inspirational, motivational, or informative.

Q: What does the poster design have to include?
A: The poster design must include at least one image from the Image Library (note: not all images in the Image Library may be used for the contest) and at least one word.

Q: Which images can students use for the contest?
A: Students can use the images labeled “Fuqua,” “IRC,” and “Foott” that are found in the unitedstreaming Image Library.

Q: What constitutes a completed entry?
A: A completed entry has two things: 1) poster design and 2) student application.  The student application can be downloaded from this blog (see below).

Q: If I want to have my students search for images in the unitedstreaming Image Library, how do you recommend I do that?
A: Contact your field manager and he/she will give you a special student id and password for the contest.

Q: In what format should we submit the designs?
A: Poster designs must be one of the following: PowerPoint, Word, PDF, EPS, JPEG, or TIFF.  The file must be 11” wide by 17” high. 

Q: How do I submit my students’ work?
A: For each student, you must submit the poster design and application to your local field manager.  You can email the files or burn the files onto a CD and mail them.  The files must come from you to your field manager.  Any files sent to us from anyone other than a Discovery Educator will be disqualified. 

Q: How will the entries be judged?
A: The poster designs will be scored in three categories: Creative Expression, Artistic Design and Technical Merit.

Q: How many students will win?
A: One winner will be selected in each of three grade categories: grades 5 and under, grades 6-8, and grades 9-12.

Q: When will the winners be announced?
A: Friday, January 6, 2006 at noon (EST) via the Discovery Educator Network blog.

Q: What do the winners receive?
A: Each of the three winners will receive a $50 gift card to the Discovery Channel Store and have their poster designs professional developed into full-size classroom posters that will be sent to teachers all over the country.
