Discovery Educator Abroad

Josh_175 If you watch the Travel Channel, there is a good chance that you have already discovered a great series titled 5 Takes. The series is especially compelling this Spring since the newest venture titled 5 Takes: Pacific Rim is the first to feature a Teacher Journalist named Josh Wolff whose journeys to Australia, New Zealand, and nearby locales are sponsored by the Discovery Educator Network.

In addition to the show that airs on the Travel Channel each Monday at 7:00 pm CDT, you can also follow the adventures of Josh and the four other ‘TJs” by reading their colorful and informative blog posts and by viewing the “Webisodes” that they have created for the project. In the past few days alone, Josh has visited an aboriginal tribe known as the Tjabukai, explored the history and functionality of the boomerang, climbed through the Fremantle Prison Tunnels, and ventured into the Outback near Darwin.

The images and video reports created by Josh and the other Travel Journalists are remarkable resources for teachers who would like to take their students on a virtual tour of this fascinating part of the globe. The teaching experience is enhanced even further by the fact that readers can post to discussion boards, share experiences, and even voice recommendations for the evolving itinerary of the travelers.

If you teach high school and you would like to have an even closer connection to the Discovery Educator Abroad program, here is a special opportunity that has come up at rather short notice. On Wednesday, April 12, high school classes can participate in a special video conference with Josh Wolff and the producer of the 5 Takes program. The session is conducted using WebEx tools, and teachers would only need a computer, Internet access, and a phone connection to join the conference. With the addition of an LCD projector and a speaker phone, any participating teacher could share the experience with an entire class.

This special Webinar is scheduled to start at 8:00 a.m. CDT. If you would like to join the video conference, just contact Steve Dembo to reserve a spot, preferably before 4:00 p.m. on April 11. Whether you are able to join the call or just want to follow the adventures with your students online in the coming weeks, 5 Takes: Pacific Rim has the potential to be a great resource for your students. Enjoy the ride!
