Picture23_2    On October 1st, Discovery Channel will be launching a new series entitled ATLAS. The National Institute Attendees were honored with a sneak peek of this new show, and quickly Darlene Wolfe from Ocoee turned to me and asked, "Can we do an event for Atlas? A premiere party?".

But of course! Especially since Atlas is going to be more than a tv series. The educational resources that will be available as a result of Atlas are going to be phenomenal! Already, the website has been drawing DEN members. Ana McMoran from Hernando County has emailed me some great things she learned from the site and about the discussion boards. I’m trying Picture1_2my hand at the game. Have you been to the site yet?

But DEN members have been quick to ask, "But we’ll only be able to use it for ten days after the show airs according to copyright law. Why should we care about the premiere?" I got to smile and explain that unitedstreaming will also have Atlas materials! YEAH! (I have a DEN prize for the first DEN Star to document on the blog that Atlas is available – on the day that it’s available .)

So join us on September 30th, at 12:30 as Darlene Wolfe hosts a premiere party for Atlas at Dim Sum. We’ll play a trivia game based on the website and give prizes away, including for the person who comes the furthest. Register on the DEN website, and contact Danielle if you have any questions.

Some of you signed up to host your own Atlas events in your school or district. What are you doing to celebrate this exciting resource for education?

I received my kit yesterday also. I am ready for the Atlas experience. Every year our 2nd grade team goes “Around the World”. Each member chooses a different country and teaches to their class(about one month). At the end of the month, there is a celebration where the classes visit each “country” and the members of that “country” share the culture. It is a great experience. Last school year was an even better experience with the help of UnitedStreaming. My student enjoyed videos and lessons that I could have only dreamed of. I know that Atlas will only add to that great experience this school year.

I am still waiting for my ATLAS kit but hope it is available Monday. I am doing a training on OCtober 4th for all the teachers at our school, doing some free giveaways too. I thought that the vision for ATLAS was presented well during the webnair on the 19th. I think this series will have some great resources in the future.

You get a point for effort Cheryl. Wendy – your kit should arrive soon. Michelle – sounds like a neat unit. I love it when the students teach each other. Teachers need to learn the role of a facilitator at times.

This looks phenomenal! Is there anyway that new “Star” members can receive an Atlas kit? Just thought I’d ask and see if I can bring this resource to Flagler County.

I must be crazy…….okay, well we know I am, but still – I’m only finding the Discovery Podcast for Atlas, albums that are not related to our Atlas, and Audio Books that are also not the same. The Discovery Atlas: China Revealed looks great, and abundant. I don’t see any videos. Help me out here Karen.

Three teachers attended the WebEx cast with me last week in my office about the Atlas parties. We plan to do an event for our teaches. As follow up we added the Discovery Atlas bookmark to the teacher’s computers. My principal and the office staff loved the DA stress ball globes !

Besides celebrating each country each week we are going to do a culminating activity in November with each class sharing an activity they learned and a food from a country to share.

I received part of my Atlas kit but after talking to everyone at the luncheon, I found out the maps were shipped later. Luckily my launch party was not on Sunday night. The wiki has lots of great resources too.
