Wonderful Webinars from Discovery

Welcome aboard Marcus Hill! He’s Discovery’s new Professional Development Coordinator and is in charge of the online webinars available through unitedstreaming.

I’ve always felt that our professional development opportunities were awesome, and Picture1_3those webinars are fantastic. However, have you looked at some of the new topics? Google Earth, Google SketchUp, and Primary Sources are just a few of the topics.

If you report back to me that you have attended a webinar and give me a little update on what you learned, I’ll give you an activity point (entries towards the projector and St. Augustine!). I’m attaching the calendar for the rest of September and October. However, you can find all of this in the Professional Development Section of unitedstreaming.

Out of curiosity- who’s taken a webinar from here before? What did you think of them?

I attempted to attend a webinar from a computer at school, but was unable to as I needed to download additional data to facilitate this. Unfortunately, it was after hours, and I was unable to download without the tech administrator’s password. This was quite frustrating. Hopefully, I will remember to be proactive next time so that I won’t have any glitches. The other isssue is that the phone doesn’t reach the computer. It was a comedy of errors. Perhaps I should learn to leave school at a more reasonable hour; I wouldn’t have had these issues from home!

Take your class around the world
Looking to add some international flavor to your classroom? Have we got some options for you!

Discovery Educator Abroad [DEA] is flying across the globe once again. STAR Discovery Educator Claudia Novak will be your personal tour guide for a virtual field trip to China. Through blogs, digital photos, discussions and polls, DEA:China is an opportunity for your class to explore the orient interactively in real time!

That’s not all though. On Sunday, October 1st, the Discovery Channel and Discovery HD Theater will mark the premiere of Discovery Atlas, a global television event that focuses on the rich cultures, social diversities and natural phenomena of 20 of the world’s greatest countries. The first episode is going to be China Revealed. Some California DEN members were fortunate to be able to attend the premiere party. Susan Little reports, “I was blown away by the images and the stories shared in the Atlas program. It really showed the commonality we have as well as celebrating our differences.” A great way for you and your students to build prior knowledge for your virtual field trip with DEA!

If these projects have you chomping at the bit wondering how you can create your own global collaborations, then mark October 18th down on your calendar. The EdTechConnect series of FREE webinars continues with STAR Discovery Educator Carol Anne Maguire. Carol will be sharing her experiences with Rock Our World, an international project involving 18 countries spanning the entire globe. Students and teachers come together to learn about each other through podcasting, movie making, and face-to-face video conferencing. Registration will be open soon.

Share any ideas you have for ways classes can get involved in international collaborations!

I checked out the calendar for the webinars and was disappointed to see that I missed the Digital Storytelling sessions. They were offered in September. Hopefully they will offer it again.

I went back and looked at the site again and they have advanced sessions too. It’s great that Discovery addresses the needs of all levels. They also have a link to EdTechConnect and Digital Connections.
