I had other plans for today. Plans that included rides and shows and temptations of those expensive gadgets kids think they need while at a theme park and cry until mom or grandmom finally give in. But time was running out and I just couldn’t find another date to do our Atlas premier party that I promised we’d have back in July. I try my hardest to keep my promises, and the Atlas premier party was no exception.
I don’t regret it for one moment.
The day started with a workshop at Deltona Elementary in Spring Hill. I got to share the good news of unitedstreaming and DEN, in more ways than one. When explaining the benefits of being a STAR DEN member I got to present Ana McMoran with a certificate as our 2007 FETC North Florida DEN Scholarship Recipient. She screamed, so I screamed, and I think we finally woke up the last of the sleeping souls in the homes around the schools.
Then it was time to get on the road and race to our Atlas party in Orlando. Thank goodness for Darlene and Larry Wolfe, they were already inside setting up. (I wasn’t late, but I wasn’t as early as I like to be.) My dad ran off to get the balloons (funny story on the balloons, but too much to say to include it here) while the Wolfes and Cheryl Woolwine helped set up the technology.
We had a great time with 10 DEN members present, including one I’ve only met through electronic means (Kathy Bunch), two who came quite a distance (Cheryl from St. Augustine and Tracie Belt from Tampa area) and South Florida’s Debbie Bohanan. Janet Hallstrom, Larry and Cheryl were able to catch up from Summer Regionals, while Connie Bergstrom and Nathan Guteras networked with everyone. We played a China Trivia Game, inspired by Atlas Quest. OH by the way, the Chinese have a Communist government according to the CIA Factbook. The intro to "Explore China" on the Atlas website says "Economics of feudalism and communism are out. Capitalism is in with a Chinese Twist."
Darlene and Larry hosted the event and Cheryl came the furthest, so they were honored with Chinese hats. Dim Sum Feast played the Altas Soundtrack for all patrons to enjoy that day. Everyone got a "take out" box with a North Star stress toy to navigate by when exploring their world and a Chinese jump rope (I want video of someone actually using theirs!). Each star had a number that gave them a prize on the table. They also got quite a few gamecards, courtesy of the Discovery Store, to win a trip to China during the premiere tomorrow night. They all understand that if they win they need to take their faithful leader.
Our next stop was the Discovery Store. Come on! Who can go to Orlando and NOT go to the Discovery Store? Three other DEN members also joined me as we shopped and had a great time exploring new products. Cheryl was buying things for an upcoming presentation "De-Stressing with unitedstreaming." Fun title! We’ll share it next week.
The last stop before making it home was to this great place. Not to eat or watch a game. It was all about DEN business, but the sign outside really excited me. I’m always looking for FREE WIRELESS! They also have air hockey. I’m ready to challenge the next person, and I won’t let you win like I let Joey. Well, unless my mom stands near me and nags me into letting you win like she does when I play against Joey.
Are you not proud though that I had my camera and remembered it at all events except our shopping excursion? (I was too busy loading up my arms!)
Thank you all for spending the day DEN style! Enjoy Atlas tomorrow. I cannot wait to hear about all the parties you have planned in creative ways. The videos should be available on Monday.
North Florida, you’re the best!
