Making Movies Teaches Second Graders Writing

Shopping, birthdays, friends and football provided the inspiration for minute movies created by second graders in Terry Patrick’s class at Blue Ridge Elementary School.

The students used a Web-based movie tool to create and present original movies to their parents. The project began last fall and the movies were shown in their classroom Feb. 23. Navajo County Technology Specialist April Weston begin_of_the_skype_highlighting end_of_the_skype_highlighting assisted with the implementation of the program.

After showing the students a sample movie, they were excited to begin the project. The students learned key vocabulary words and concepts using a SMART Board lesson. They learned about setting, characters and dialogue. They watched a short video from the IDEAL Discovery Streaming Web site and learned about beginning, middle and end. Then they practiced arranging pictures and events into the beginning, middle and end of their stories.
