DEN Love: Connections Near and Far

I have been thinking about this post. I am a bit reluctant to write it. DEN Stars tend to have a way with words that I do not have. While I feel exactly the same as so many others do about the DEN, I know that I cannot make my words truly express how I feel.

I decided to give it a go anyway…something happened this morning that crystallized for me why I love the DEN so much.

Today is Zulma Whiteford’s birthday. She is my friend – my DEN road trip buddy, my sounding board and my cheerleader. She’s good people.

For twelve years, Zulma and I have worked in the same district, at schools five miles apart from one another. We never met. We work in a district where teachers do not have many opportunities to interface with educators from other schools.  And when teachers do meet, the day’s schedule does not give time for collaboration and sharing ideas. We had no clue that the other one existed.  Last spring, I saw in the DEN Weekly Update that an educator from my town had been accepted into the DEN Summer Institute. I reached out to congratulate her and the rest is history.  How incredible is it that it took the DEN for us to meet?

In wishing Zulma a “Happy Birthday” this morning, I realized that without my DEN friends I would be in a very different place.

This is one reason why I love the DEN so much. It gives me connections with educators near and far!
