Mousey Monday: The American Red Cross

Happy Mousey Monday from Mousey to our Cache and Cookies readers! March is American Red Cross Month! Discovery Education has various video resources from the formation and beginnings of the American Red Cross to an informational video on how to react in various natural disasters and prevent accidents.

The American Red Cross, also known as the American National Red Cross is a foundation that provides humanitarian aid, emergency assistance, disaster relief and education within the United States. The foundation was founded in Washington DC on May 21, 1881 by Clara Barton. Discovery Education has an excellent image resource to show your students who was Clara Barton.

As mentioned earlier, the American Red Cross provides education on how to prepare to natural disasters and the prevention of accidents. The American Red Cross Emergency Test is a 32 minute full video that touches on both of these topics.

In regards to recent events such as Hurricane Sandy, it is a great idea to share this video with age appropriate viewers. The video is recommended for grades 6-8 and can definitely be shown to grades 9-12 as well. This video resource has real world application for students as well as teachers. We all hope that these natural disasters are few and uncommon, but they do happen and it is better to be prepared and informed than clueless when such events arise.

We here at Discovery Education thank the American Red Cross for all of the great work that they do. If you have the time please visit their site to view additional resources and information that you can share with your students in the classroom as well as fellow colleagues. There are also links and information on how you can help and donate to the American Red Cross.

The Discovery Education Support team and Mousey would like to thank our Cache and Cookies readers for taking time out of their Monday morning to stop by here with us! We hope that our resources are of great use to you and your students in celebrating American Red Cross Month! If you have any questions or comments please feel free to tweet us at @DESupportStars. Have a great week!
