Mousey Monday – May 13

Happy Mousey Monday from Mousey! Mousey wants to celebrate Alison Hargreaves’ conquest in 1995. Alison became the first woman, on this day in 1995, to conquer Mount Everest without oxygen or the help of sherpas. Sherpas are an ethic group known for their elite mountaineering skills and expertise on the mountainous terrain.

If you want to further investigate the lives of sherpas, Discovery Education has an excellent  4 minute video segment titled Mount Everest Sherpas: Genetic Advantages for High-Altitude Living on sherpas and their genetic adaptations to their mountainous homes.

Discovery Education also has a 30 minute full video titled Daily Planet: In Search of Mt. Everest detailing the obstacles Alison Hargreaves may have encountered on her conquest of Mount Everest. Share the video with your students to truly understand what was achieved on this day in 1995.

Discovery Education also has various images available for Mount Everest aside from the video images that can be used for a Writing Prompt assignment.

Inspire your students with Alison Hargreaves’ story and use our resources to outline what she went through to achieve her conquest of Mount Everest. Alison Hargreaves was a remarkable woman indeed. It is hard to believe what some people can accomplish when they have a passion.
