Meet the New Summer DENtern!

Saying goodbye to exams and final papers has never felt better with the thought of Discovery Educator Network as my next step. As the new social media and marketing intern for DEN (the DENtern), I am happily making a new home for myself in the Chicago office while surrounding myself with an inspiring, innovative, and proactive group of people. This summer I will be working on projects from Connected Educator Month to creating social media campaigns that connect educators locally and across the country.

After completing my sophomore year at Northwestern University majoring in Radio/Television/Film, I am excited to spend my first summer in Chicago exploring different neighborhoods while uncovering and embracing my inner-Midwest spirit (c’mon who doesn’t love free refills?). While the Northwestern campus is in Evanston, a suburb about 40 minutes away from downtown Chicago, I am happy to get the chance to spend more of my time in the city, something I don’t get the chance to do as often during the school year. My summer bucket list consists of the “Tomatina-inspired” tomato fight on Soldier Field, Taste of Chicago Food Festival, Chicago Cubs game, outdoor Movies in the Park, sailing and paddle boarding on Lake Michigan, and the quest to find the best frozen yogurt.

Originally from New York, I am looking forward to the transition in living between different cities and getting familiarized specifically with the Chicago food scene. Working for the Northwestern student-run Food Magazine SPOON and being an avid food blog reader in general, I cannot wait for summer backyard and beach barbecues putting my marinade and grilling to the test. Choice of meat: Bison medium rare.

What initially drew me to Discovery Communications is its mission to inspire curiosity through engaging content. There’s also the fact that the few times when my 11th grade physics teacher was absent, the class always got to watch a physics-related episode of MythBusters. Therefore, I inherently have this positive association of MythBusters and my high school education…seems appropriate for my time at DEN. Overall, I am excited to engage deeper within the Discovery Educator Network community and Discovery Communications at large while using social media platforms and marketing strategies to help connect and inspire educators across the country.
