Calendar of Cool: Massive Meteorite Lands in China

On March 8, 1976, the largest single meteorite ever to be recovered landed in China.

A massive meteor shower showered a 310 square mile section of northeastern China with space rocks, including one that tipped the scales at nearly two tons.

The massive meteorite, which landed in Jilin City, is the largest single piece of meteor ever recovered. The rock punched through frozen ground to embed itself more than 20 feet into the soil and registered a 1.7 on the Richter earthquake scale.

The largest meteorite we’ve ever been able to find? Crash-tastically cool!
