Just in case none of your friends happened greet you with the phrase, “May the Fourth be with you” this past Monday, May 4th was Star Wars Day!
In honor of this occasion, it seemed like a good time for Fun Fact Friday to highlight a new scientific discovery, the “Greedo fish”, or Peckoltia greedoi.
If you don’t know Star Wars well, Greedo was the green, bug-eyed alien bounty hunter dispatched by Han Solo in Mos Eisley Cantina, in the original Star Wars film.
This recently discovered species of catfish bears a striking resemblance to the aforementioned alien, and was given its name by Jonathan Armbruster, biological sciences professor at the Auburn University Museum of Natural History, who explains in the video below:
If that wasn’t amazing enough, apparently there are 10 species named after Star Wars! Now that’s a fun fact!
