Michelle is the Principal at Schuyler Middle School in Nebraska. She is new to Discovery Education and shared “This is the first school year utilizing Discovery Education services! There is no going back-student learning is on fire in my building!”
How do you start your day?
Honestly, I start the day by hitting the snooze button! Then, it is off to making breakfast, packing backpacks and lunch, checking the substitute situation, and grabbing coffee for the drive to school!
Why did you become a teacher?
To care deeply about others and serve through educating
What is one of your favorite ways to use Discovery Education?
As an administrator, I use the Discovery Education class data to help educators understand the strengths and weaknesses of students. By understanding the data, we can collaborate to develop a plan to influence student learning for consistent gains.
What is a ritual you have in your classroom?
Every morning, I make the coffee for our office staff. Then, I stop in to go over the day with my assistant principal. Then, it is off to meet with staff members informally and offering supervision in the hallways. Right before the bell rings, I return to the office, get ready to read the building announcements and the Pledge of Allegiance. Before signing off, I always remind the building that, “It’s a great day to be a Schuyler Warrior!”
How are you involved in education aside from your role as educator?
I just work to fulfill the responsibilities of my role. Some days, that means working with community and parent groups. Other days, it means mentoring a staff member to become more than they are.
What advice do you give to a teacher who is hesitant to use digital media in their classroom?
Just take each opportunity one day at a time. Take one small step at a time. By the end of the quarter, your small steps have turned into leaps and bounds!
What advice do you have for first year teachers?
Remember that student learning and relationships are why we are in our profession. If other distractions get in the way, remember to keep them secondary!
What sites do you visit to assist in your teaching practice?
What other organizations/groups are you a part of?
Nebraska Council of School Administrators
Nebrask and National Association of Secondary School Principals
What is your most memorable experience with the DEN?
As a new administrator, it has been so helpful to go to a Discovery Education network outside of my building! Seeing that I was not the only administrator in the first year of techbook integration helped me understand where my building could go!
When you’re not working, where are we most likely to find you?
In the back yard playing with my family or on a day trip to a lake, zoo, museum, or mall
What is your favorite kind of donut?
Cinnamon Roll with Maple Frosting!
