DEN Community Member of the Week: Francie Snyder

Francie is an Educator of the Gifted in Manatee County, Florida.  She has been using Discovery Education for nearly 10 years and has been a DEN STAR since 2010 and a member of the Leadership Council since 2012. She shared “Honestly, the impact all of this has had on my teaching and my students learn is really unmeasurable. Through the connections and content I acquired through Discovery Education touch what goes on in my classroom on a daily basis. I am a better person and educator, because of the DEN.

Hills are Alive.jpgWhy did you become a teacher?
I enjoy students and learning! Education is a great combination of the two.
What is one of your favorite ways to use Discovery Education?

What is a ritual you have in your classroom?
I am not sure I would call it a ritual, but we play several strategy games; Mancula, 20 Questions…. Games like this not only teach strategies for the game, but also how to win and lose with dignity. Games build community like nothing else. Also, I am a mean Mancala player and rarely lose. My gifted students see this a challenge and there is great pride when they tie or beat me.
How are you involved in education aside from your role as educator?
I Blog http://digiduchess.blogspot.com/ and, I have been working on creating SOS strategies too with other DEN Educators.

What advice do you give to a teacher who is hesitant to use digital media in their classroom?
Remember that all learning (including learning with digital media) is a process and that process has strategies. The digital media is just a fabulous tool and should be treated as such. The verbs and process of learning should be overpowered by the tool of digital media. Also, find yourself a tribe and the DEN is an AMAZING one! The area of digital media is moving and changing daily and if you are going to survive the pace (or pretend to keep up) you are going to need a tribe.

What advice do you have for first year teachers?
Don’t feel that you have learn it all the first year, because in reality it can’t be done. Also, give yourself some grace (and join the DEN. )

What is your most memorable experience with the DEN?
This is hard there are just so many. I am going to go with three experiences:
-Frist, would be a trip that we took to The FableViison offices as part of DENSI 2010. I was inspired by Peter Reynolds speech that day and his office is just fun.
-ISTE 2012 hung with the DEN the entire week. The CA DEN rolled out the red carpet and really reached out to those of there from other places. It was my first ISTE and they really were kind and made me feel welcome.
-DENSI 2013 Burlington where I took a leap of faith came early and ended bound with my Hills are Alive Buddies. Since that trip we have been in constant contact and I love those girls.

When you’re not working, where are we most likely to find you?Francie and family
There could be a few things:
-Hanging with family and friends. We don’t have to be doing anything special I really just like being with my favorite people (and this does include Buddy my favorite 4 legged friend).
-Reading
-Photography (http://duchesssphotography.blogspot.com/)
-Traveling when there is money
