Laura is a 4th Grade Special Education Teacher in Baldwin County in Alabama. Laura has been using Discovery Education for 8 years. How do you start your day?
I wake up and have breakfast and coffee with my husband before going to work. Once I get to school, I start my morning with outside duty where I greet my students. After duty the day gets hectic in the classroom.
Why did you become a teacher?
I became a teacher to inspire others to make a difference in their lives and the lives of others. I became a teacher to influence and mold the minds of young people. I also became a teacher to encourage students to discover their creativity and individuality.
What is one of your favorite ways to use Discovery Education?
One of my favorite ways to use Discovery Education is to assign my students a Board Builder project and let them loose. Some of the boards they create are absolutely amazing and more than I could ever ask for.
What is a ritual you have in your classroom?
Weekly Rewards, the students are rewarded for their good behavior on Fridays.
How are you involved in education aside from your role as educator?
At our school, we are implementing the Leader In Me program. I am actively involved on the Lighthouse Team that leads our faculty and staff in facilitating the 7 Habits of the Leader In Me program.
What advice do you give to a teacher who is hesitant to use digital media in their classroom?
Don’t hesitate to ask for help. The digital device your using is not as fragile as you think.
What advice do you have for first year teachers?
Try not to get overwhelmed, the work will be there tomorrow. Make sure to leave work at school, and enjoy time at home. Take it one day at a time. To the world you may be just a teacher, but to your students you are a hero!
