When Discovery Education community member Rodney Crouse decided to participate in the Celebrate the Holidays with Discovery Education global collaborative project, he had no idea how one student would inspire a movement in his community.
DaJonae, a fifth grade student, was tasked with inventing a new holiday, so she decided to combine two of her favorites: Thanksgiving and her birthday. This year she realized there was not enough time and resources around the Thanksgiving holiday to meet all of the needs her local homeless community had and that one day to celebrate everything she is thankful for was not enough. Her strong desire for making a difference and her heart full of compassion, led to her creation of Thanksgiving 2.0 to be held on May 20th, the day after her birthday.
She and her teacher Rodney have already reached out to their local churches and organizations who want to help make this happen in their community. They have even started buying turkeys now to be sure they have enough in May.
Take a moment to watch the interview below where she shares more about her vision for Thanksgiving 2.0 and what she’s already doing to make a difference.
