Kristen is a 1st grade teacher in Santa Rosa County, Florida. She shared “Discovery Education has made my life as a teacher so much better! It has given me a huge amount of resources at my fingertips. There’s something to supplement any subject I’m teaching! DE has also helped me to connect to other educators who are innovative and have great ideas. I am so thankful for the DEN community!”
Why did you become a teacher?
I became a teacher because I love kids. I knew I wanted to do something that was always interesting and that was meaningful work. I am good with kids and now I get to be with my own each day as well.
What is a ritual you have in your classroom?
In my classroom each morning we do attenDANCE where we dance down the line when we are taking attendance. I got the idea from another amazing educator at my school who knows how to make school somewhere kids want to be. The catch is that since we can’t be dancing all day at school, only the kids who are in my room three minutes before the tardy bell rings get to do it. The students loved it so much that I usually had them all long before the bell rang.
What advice do you give to a teacher who is hesitant to use digital media in their classroom?
I would tell teachers to just go for it and they won’t be sorry they did! Technology has changed my classroom in ways I didn’t even know it would! My students are enjoying learning, staying engaged, and making exceptional gains.
When you’re not working, where are we most likely to find you?
When I’m not at work you can find my family and I at the creek. We love to spend a day or spend a weekend on the sandbar!
