This week, we share three Lively Lessons in three days to prepare for the Meet Students Who Are Changing the World student panel discussion, taking place Thursday, January 21, at 1 PM ET.
Today’s lesson features visual notetaking, or sketchnoting. Sketchnoting enables students to work non-linearly, represent concepts symbolically, create a hierarchy of ideas, and combine text and non-text elements in their product.

Before the Meet Students Who Are Changing the World student panel discussion, share these essential questions with students.
- What inspires people to work toward change?
- How can the actions of an individual have a broader impact on their communities or the world?
- What single event or series of experiences inspired these individuals to pursue change?
Advise students to capture thoughts and ideas about the essential questions during the panel discussion using their preferred note taking techniques. Upon conclusion of the panel discussion, have students visually interpret their response to one of the essential questions using sketchnoting techniques, such as using “containers” for information and creating connections using arrows. Flexible Grouping Ideas
Have small groups of students work together with their completed individual visual notes to create a combined narrative connecting their ideas. Capture their ideas with SOS: Paper Slide video.
Modify this activity by providing a visual prompt to students for sketchnoting, such as a photo of student panelists and “thought bubble” cut-outs, instructing students to note ideas from the panelists point of view.
