Community Member of the Week: Cathy Houchin

Cathy is an elementary music teacher at Watertown Unified School District in Wisconsin. She has been using Discovery education since 2006. She shared “It was the best move I have made in education. I have not been the same since. It has taught me a myriad of ways to infuse technology into my classroom as well as ways to create student ownership of their work.”
What is one of your most memorable experiences with the Discovery Education Community?
Everything about DEN is memorable. So many wonderful things have happened through the DEN, I can’t point to one. The best one is the true friends I have made.
How do you start your day?BC126867-1B1D-40CD-BF3C-58846F1483C6
With prayer.
Why did you become a teacher?
My Dad was a teacher. In those days a girl could become about 3 things. A nurse, teacher or an airline hostess. I thought about being a librarian, but I knew I couldn’t be quiet all day.
How are you involved in education aside from your role as educator?
I write 2 blogs. www.cancerandmore.com and www. CathyHouchin.com and am I am and adjunct professor for Tools for Learning. I also host DEN Voices Connect, it is my passion project to connect teachers and students around the world through song.
What advice do you give to a teacher who is hesitant to use digital media in their classroom?
Just try! You won’t know if it works unless you try. Ask a coworker to help you. It will surprise you how excited the students are when they use technology. You can learn from the students too! They are always showing me something new about a various site etc.
What advice do you have for first year teachers?
1.Don’t be afraid to try new ideas. If they don’t work then you have accomplished something. You have learned what not to do.
2. Don’t be afraid to ask someone for help. Teaching is a team profession. We all have our strength and weaknesses. Ask
3. Connect with DEN friends. You will find tons of resources
What sites do you visit to assist in your teaching practice?IMG_0780.JPG
Twitter…..It is a great source of PD as a teacher. I love the ideas I learn here.
Facebook….DEN Friends. I love how I can put out a question and it will be answered within the hour. I was teaching a graduate class this summer and the class had a question about math sites. They could not believe how the answers came in. It shows the power of the DEN
What other organizations/groups are you a part of?
I am on two leadership committees PLN’s for ISTE; Arts and Technology Network and Innovative Learning Network. I am also a Google Innovator and Osmo Ambassador.
When you’re not working, where are we most likely to find you?
Probably not at home. I love to travel, shop, and kayak. I am always on the go.
