Sedley is a Lead Library Media Coordinator at Davidson County Schools in North Carolina. She has been using Discovery Education Streaming for 10 years and recently Davidson County Schools added Techbook. Sedley shared “I am the district administrator for DE and work with it on a daily basis and I “Discover” something new every day! Because I don’t have a classroom, I’m not directly working with students but I do get to work with teachers and school librarians regularly. I am really excited about our DEN Ambassador program! I have been busy leading this dynamic group of digital educators along with our team of technology facilitators and it’s been a blast! We have great things in store for this group and we are hopeful about the impact our program will have on student learning.”
What sites do you visit daily or weekly to assist in your teaching practice?
I love Twitter.
What is a ritual you have in your classroom?
I’m a big fan of Harry Wong and his classroom management strategies. I like to raise my hand silently to get attention, or say 5-4-3-2-1 and talking is done.
How are you involved in education other than your official role as a K-12 educator?
I facilitate our blog for our librarians: www.dcslibrarymedia.weebly.com. I am president-elect for the NC School Librarian’s Association (NCSLMA). I also serve on the affiliate assembly for the AASL (American Association of School Librarians). I am on the steering committee for the NC Geographic Alliance, helping to support efforts in geography in education. Last year, I was a teacher scholar for the NCGA and conducted research for teachers and students at the National Archives in London. I also present several times a year at conferences.
When your not working where are we most likely to find you?
At home relaxing with family or my dog Happy.
What is your most memorable experience with the DEN?
Why did you become a teacher?
I love working with young people. I’ve always loved learning and I feel like teaching is a job where you never stop learning!
What’s something new that you’ve recently learned?
I’ve been working with Google Hangouts on Air and recently conducted a virtual field trip. Our first go was not exactly smooth, so I learned a lot about what NOT to do.
What’s your favorite SOS to use with students?
Paper slides! Hands down! I just love how easy it is to integrate technology and get instant feedback!
What are you reading or something on your to-read list?
I’m working through a stack of books I got from the ALA conference. That, and reading the Harper Lee books for my Book Club.
What brings you joy?
books, old photographs, dinner I don’t have to cook
