Fun Fact Friday: Scotland’s National Animal

Did you know that Scotland’s official national animal is the unicorn? It’s true!

According to Wikipedia, ” The Royal Coat of Arms of Scotland, used prior to 1603 by the Kings of Scotland was supported by two unicorns and the current royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom is supported by a unicorn for Scotland along with a lion for England. The unicorn is frequently found as an ornament on mercat crosses.”

According to Scottish folklore, the unicorn and the lion don’t get along well at all.

Apparently at least one medieval recipe has been discovered, in an ancient book, describing how to cook a unicorn!

One might wonder if there were ever laws on the books protecting unicorns in Scotland, because surely they are particularly scarce!
