DEN Community Member of the Week: Jordan Todd

Jordan is a 2nd grade ELA Team leader in Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools, NC. Jordan was recently awarded the CMS Teacher of the year. She has been using Discovery Education for 3 years. She shared, “DE has had a huge impact on my instruction. I have been able to create specific Core aligned test probes, I use DE’s puzzle maker, lesson plans, and virtual field trips. I have used videos to bring home important science and social studies lessons. I have literally incorporated DE in every aspect of instruction and it has added hands on experiences to important and necessary skills.”

What is one of your favorite ways to use Discovery Education?
It’s really hard to choose my favorite feature, but quite honestly I love catering assessment probes to their current instructional need. I think this is the best way to prepare 2nd graders for the impending 3rd grade end of grade test.

How are you involved in education other than your role as a K-12 educator?
I mentor teachers and students.

When you’re not working, where are we likely to find you?
When I am not working I am either hanging out with my family, dedicating time to students who I mentor, or at one of my sons many intramural sports.

Why did you become a teacher?

I became a teacher because my mother was a teacher and I wanted to work with children just like she did. I was made to teach.

What are you reading?
Teaching with Poverty in Mind, Teach Like a Champion

What brings you joy?
My son brings me absolute joy. I love my family and my makes me want to push harder, create a better world for him. I also find immense joy with the work that I do. I work in a high poverty school and everyday there is a struggle but there is also a victory daily and that is joy to me.
