Two Stars and A Wish

SOS Big IdeaNumerous studies indicate that feedback is most effective when it is given 
immediately. Research indicates that individuals who are given immediate feedback show a significantly larger increase in performance than those who receive delayed feedback. James Pennebaker states that, “Students must be given access to information about their performance . . . At the broadest level, students need to know if they actually have mastered the material or not. Giving them information about the ways they are studying, reading, searching for information, or answering questions can be invaluable.

SOS StepsMaterials: 
Pencil, paper

Note: Use this strategy after students have completed a response or other assignment. It will give them the opportunity to receive constructive criticism and immediate feedback on their work. This strategy may be used in pairs or small groups.

  1. Have students trade assignments. 
  2. Each student should read the other individual’s writing and record two stars (things that he or she liked, thought that the other student did well, or were noteworthy) and one wish (something that he or she thinks could be improved or changed beginning with an “I wish…”).
  3. Have students trade papers again until all students have completed the process orif in pairstrade back.

SOS Sum It Up

Having students evaluate work gives them authentic opportunities to learn critical thinking skills. Additionallythis strategy allows students to learn how to provide positive feedback in a safe environment.



SOS More Ideas– Have students evaluate a new lesson by giving two stars and one wish to lesson you’ve delivered! 

– Have students record their Two Stars and One Wish with a Web 2.0 tool such as Google Docs or Padlet. This could be an effective way to collect Exit Ticket information, particularly in a 1:1 environment where all students have immediate access to devices.

    LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this!!! I have students give peer feedback during an activity I call Authors’ Circle. This SOS strategy is a wonderful way to focus the feedback. I can imagine expanding this strategy to include math explanations, projects, and presentations! Thank you!

    I personally have used this in my classroom! Feedback is so powerful! It’s great to see my students authentically engaged in the learning process & communicating effectively with their peers! Even 1st graders can give constructive feedback to one another. This is a great strategy that easily allows teachers to determine if the students providing the feedback are transferring & applying their knowledge as well.
