Spotlight on Strategies: Paper Chat
(Canadian Version)
All Services
Grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12, Instructional Strategy

This teaching strategy allows students to develop critical thinking and communication skills, while ensuring that every student’s thoughts and opinions are heard. Students respond to a question, and then continue the conversation, by communicating on paper about a selected topic. Explain to your students that invention is often a collaborative process. Then, to fuel inventive thinking, use this strategy with prompts specifically designed (and written in the middle of the chat paper) to get students communicating about idea generation. You might write any of the following prompts or others you think will work with your students:

What makes it hard to travel around in the world? What would it be really cool to be able to do that you can’t do now? What are some of your favorite machines and why?
