#CelebrateWithDE – Earth Day 2017

Celebrating Earth Day seems like a breeze in grades K-12 because there are so many angles to take: animals, plants, weather, energy, water…. The sky is – literally – the limit! Although such a broad topic can present unique challenges, consider celebrating curiosity and learning and start with a broad stroke using one of Discovery’s signature programs. Then let your students explore various areas of interest, either on their own or in small affinity groups. Invite students to go on archived virtual field trips and be sure to have them search for interactives and digital explorations, too. There is plenty for your students to do and see on Earth Day that will deepen their appreciation for the planet.

Grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12, Instructional Strategy

This teaching strategy helps students make connections, summarize, and work on grammar and writing skills. The teacher displays four images [or words, or phrases, or drawings]; students write one sentence about each image, then work together to use all their sentences to create one final piece. Since students may be interacting with widely varying media during your Earth Day learning, use the opportunity to really challenge their ability to make connections under the umbrella topic: Earth.
