APPLY

Encourage your students to take inspiration from their Halloween learning and write a spooky story of their own. Set appropriate length limits for your students and/or allow them to collaborate. Here’s a resource about scary storytelling for younger students. Tomie DePaola and a lively group of puppets talk about adding scary things to stories. Telling Stories with Tomie dePaola: Scary (Canadian Version).

  1. To set the writing environment, use the SOS Surround Sound to set the mood.
  2. For the draft writing, use the SOS Quick Writes to invite students to sketch a story idea
  3. For peer review, hold a session of the SOS Quick Conference.

Have students narrate their completed stories in a program like Audacity and encourage them to include sound effects and music from Discovery Education. We’ve given you some samples below, but there are more to explore. [Note: Some of the sound effects in our library are gruesome! Review resources before sharing with younger students.]
