APPLY

Students have learned about many different holidays and through many different types of media. Encourage them to draw common themes from the media and analyze the true meaning of holidays by using the instructional strategy Concept Circles (Canadian Version) from the SOS series. Modify the circle and use “holidays” at the center surrounded by four words (e.g., food, rituals, gifts, service) or phrases (e.g., “tis the season”) for the students to reflect upon. Once the students have had a chance to reflect and discuss, encourage them to participate in a fun wrap up using Instagram-in’ (Canadian Version) from the SOS series, where students respond to a prompt with a drawing and a hashtag. Make your prompt a broad question about holiday symbols and meanings, such as “What symbol best defines your favorite holiday and why?”
