#CelebrateWithDE – Daylight Saving

Daylight Saving is back just as reliably as the rotation of the earth around the sun. Go beyond the clocks and the controversy to take a closer look at the star at the center of it all: Daylight. Whether helping us see more clearly or warming the planet or adding a little something special to the technology behind art, daylight brightens all our lives.

Cue the Daylight

Each of the following resources features daylight as a main element to the story, whether fiction or non-fiction. Have students pay particular attention to what daylight can do for us in the workplace, at home, and in art. Today, have students write an Ode to Daylight to welcome a little more of it over the summer by completing a shape poem. Use the strategy Make It Concrete (Canadian Version), from the SOS series, to guide students as they write.

Dav Pilkey’s 1996 Caldecott Honor book, narrated by Forest Whitaker, comes alive. Every Saturday morning a paperboy and his dog get ready to leave their nice warm bed to deliver a newspaper to every house along the route they both know by heart. Before daylight, they return home and to bed.
