Content Collection: Autumn
Grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12, Assorted Resources
Autumn cooling is the result of the Earth’s axis, which results in less sunlight and colder temperatures than during the summer. This collection includes resources, lesson starters, and a featured instructional strategy.
Start off with a short discussion about the seasons, including what causes seasonal change and how students can recognize it. Then, use the video below as a model for using images (or video clips) as the basis for a written piece. Students will be asked to select a series of images of autumn and create a narrative, poem, or song to go along with them. We’ve provided some images, below, but recommend you let students use their own accounts to search for more.

Use one of many instructional strategies from our Spotlight on Strategies (SOS) series to focus on close reading of images and descriptive writing and inspire your students to express themselves through poetry, narrative, and song writing. Browse the entire SOS collection (Canadian Version) in your account. Or, try one of these suggested strategies: Poetry Slam (Canadian Version) – adapt the strategy by having students use only images to inform their performance; Instagram-in (Canadian Version); or Eye Spy (Canadian Version). Use #CelebrateWithDE on social media to share your students’ celebrations of autumn!
