Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Celebrate the patron saint of Ireland with us by focusing on some of the symbolism and pageantry that make this day special every year. We’re celebrating with images pairing them with fun activities that will help students test the luck o’ the Irish as they discover and honor this special holiday.

St. Patrick’s Day on March 17 is the Roman Catholic feast day of the patron saint of Ireland, who died on that day in the year 461. The many Irish who emigrated to other countries made St. Patrick’s Day a secular holiday celebrating all things Irish.


Everything’s Turning Up Green.We’ve collected images of clover and parades – a cherished symbol and favorite activity for St. Patrick’s Day. Along with your study and discussion of the history and significance of St. Patrick’s Day, have students look closely at these images and provide them a structure for reading, discussing, and/or writing about them.

Provide structure for close reading of the images with one of these ideas from our Spotlight on Strategies (SOS) Series:

Pick a Card: students pick a card with a specific prompt as they study the image (e.g., write down three things you notice; think of two questions; write down how you think this image relates to the holiday, etc.)

Eye Spy: students look at an image multiple times, each time looking for more detail and deeper understanding.

Get VENNY-y with It: students identify similarities by comparing and contrasting two side-by-side images.
