Students nowadays are more plugged in than ever to global challenges. Ranging from environmental and health issues to science and tech challenges, students are more invested than ever in helping to create a productive and safe future. According to the Pew Research Center, “technology, in particular, [is responsible] for the rapid evolution of how people communicate and interact…what is unique for Generation Z is that the [internet] has been part of their lives from the start” – making their access to knowledge, information, and global challenges that much more immediate and pressing.
3M has plugged into the conversations surrounding global challenges by asking students to participate in the 2019 3M Young Scientists Challenge – a challenge asking students from grades 5 – 8 to create a 1 – 2 minute video describing a solution to an everyday problem. The 3M Young Scientist Challenge received an incredible amount of entries, with students diving in to develop the innovative solutions to some of our most pressing issues. After a lengthy deliberation, 3M has chosen the top 10 finalists who will now be paired with a 3M Scientist for an exclusive summer mentorship as they prepare to compete for the grand prize of $25,000, and the title of America’s Top Young Scientist!
Meet the finalists here:
Make sure to follow their journey as the finalists’ head to the final competition on October 28-29, 2019 at 3M’s Innovation Center in St. Paul, Minnesota. Stay up-to-date by following the Young Scientist Blog! Each finalist will be publishing blog posts describing their journeys so far, as they spend their summers collaborating one-on-one with a 3M scientist to bring their idea to life, and prepare for the final competition this fall. New to this years’ challenge, the Improving Lives Award will be a chance for the public to recognize the project they feel will improve the most lives.
