Explore NEW Digital Resources to Support Virtual STEM Learning

As educators around the country are preparing students and parents for several weeks of virtual learning, the STEM Careers Coalition has introduced dozens of new digital resources that are easily adaptable for use at home.  These highly engaging activities are appropriate for grades K-8 and encourage students to use their problem-solving skills to address everyday challenges. Read below for an overview of four of our favorite new activities!

In Water Solutions, students have the opportunity to discover how household materials can be used filter contaminants from water.  Perfect for grades K-5, this elementary school activity includes a printable filter testing handout and step-by-step instructions to implement.  Students will have a great time just creating the “contaminated” water with dirt, pebbles, leaves and paper to test against the filters.

It’s important for students to make sure they are remaining physically active, even from home! The Move It! Activity encourages students to examine the importance of regular physical activity in order to live their best lives!  This is an incredibly timely exercise that uses family collaboration and brainstorming to help students discover why those regular breaks to get their bodies moving are so vital.

Although students are not in the school environment right now, Waste Not provides a great exercise for identifying ways to manage food waste at home.  Using the resources included in the downloadable PDF, students can develop a plan to reduce, reuse and recycle their waste effectively.  This is an activity that encourages involvement by the whole family, and one that can lead to long term lifestyle improvements!

For grades 6-8, Petroleum Hunt takes students on a journey to learn the amazing range of everyday products that are created from petrochemicals.  Students will discover that everything from musical instruments to makeup and furniture are petroleum refined products and end with a collage of product images developed based on their research.

Each of these activities and more can be found at STEMCareersCoalition.org, along with the ever-expanding Careers Portal, which allows students to explore a wide variety of STEM careers.  This library of resources will continue to expand, so make sure you check back for updates.
