AstraZeneca, Learning Undefeated, and Discovery Education have partnered to create Generation Health: How Science Powers Us, a dynamic middle school program that aims to make science personal through a focus on healthy living messaging. This program provides hands-on, standards-aligned STEM learning activities where students investigate both preventative measures and innovative solutions to key health concerns in the areas of oncology, cardiovascular, and respiratory. The Generation Health Virtual Field Trip (VFT) is available on-demand to provide students with an opportunity to discover the science involved in the pursuit of a new medication.
Viewers can access the VFT as a whole (~25 min) or in chapters, making the content flexible for integration into any virtual lesson. The accompanying educator guide includes all of the information students would need to get even more out of the VFT, with pre- and post-viewing activities. Our favorite, Mystery Box, is an interactive activity that allows students to follow along with the hosts in the VFT using the scientific method to discover what is inside their mystery box.
The field trip is easy to access from any digital device by visiting https://www.howsciencepowersus.com/education-resources/virtual-field-trip.
Generation Health also features a complete digital lesson bundle with video content, an educator guide and a student-facing presentation to teach middle school students about lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer deaths in the nation. In the Using Bio-Markers to Identify Lung Cancer Subtypes activity, students will learn how doctors work to identify the subtype of cancer that a patient has and subsequently use that information to inform the development of a treatment plan.
Providing students with resources to deepen their health knowledge has never been more important. Expand your students’ virtual learning experience with digital resources from Generation Health and help them make healthier decisions for life!
