As educators, parents and students around the world strive to adapt to the new normal, the availability of quality resources to help families continue to support virtual learning is a primary focus. A long-time Discovery Education partner, 3M is committed to helping teachers and students as they adapt to a new way of learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In partnership with the Bakken Museum and Discovery Education, 3M has developed Science at Home, a series of fun and educational at-home science experiments for students ages 6-12.
Conducted on video by real 3M scientists in their homes, these simple experiments use common household items and are designed to reinforce core scientific principles. The content is accessible from any digital device and flexible enough for educators to incorporate in digital lessons, and to provide to parents and caregivers to implement at home. Each experiment also includes background information on the key concepts to be explored, a complete materials list, step-by-step written instructions, and detailed “observation and results” to expand student learning. The selected experiments all support NGSS Disciplinary Core Ideas, which have broad importance within or across multiple science or engineering disciplines.
Educators and caregivers can currently find experiments on the site that demonstrate scientific principles such as push & pull, along with videos that demonstrate how science impacts everyday activities – like the physics behind the fidget spinner! 3M scientists will be adding new experiments to Science at Home ongoing, with some special guest scientists featured along the way.
With a long history of supporting STEM and quality education programming, Science at Home is just one way 3M is playing its part in building the next generation of science innovators. The 3M Young Scientist Lab is a year-round, no cost program providing interactive experiences, student activities and standards-aligned teaching tools. The keystone of the program is the award-winning annual 3M Young Scientist Challenge, the nation’s premier science competition for students in grades 5-8.
Check out Science at Home regularly for new resources and be sure share these materials with your students’ families to continue learning through the summer!
Science at Home videos are also available in Discovery Education Experience on the 3M Young Scientist Lab Channel.
