Hi everyone! My name’s Vashti Williams and I work on our digital content team at Discovery Education. My team helps curate the hundreds of channels you see in Discovery Education Experience – all with the goal of providing you timely and relevant resources to help you build your lesson plans. We produce DE Original content and work with many trusted content partners to help you navigate important discussions with your students and help connect them to the real world.
That being said, I’m excited to kick off February by highlighting new content added to the African American Experiences channel, available for Experience users. Inside the channel, educators and students will find hundreds of videos, interactives, podcasts, audiobooks, reading passages and instructional resources that are aligned to the four anchor domains of the Teaching Tolerance Social Justice standards: Identity, Diversity, Justice, and Action.
The history tab inside the channel features stories and resources about changemakers, newsmakers, and moments in time throughout our nation’s history when African Americans have triumphed, celebrated, struggled, protested, and made history. The culture tab features contemporary events and storytellers, artists, athletes, and activists, plus a collection of African Americans in STEM careers. In the politics tab, students will meet political figures from both sides of the aisle, including Kamala Harris and Sojourner Truth.
Our hope is that the resources will help students understand America’s complex history, gain insight into the experiences of classmates, and imagine a more equitable future for all. Let us know which resources you’re excited to share with students and check back next week for more!
