Use this activity from our Social-Emotional Learning Coalition to help students build their capacity to connect to the world around them, ask questions to further their knowledge, and extend their understanding through utilizing their own communities. While the embedded activity challenges students to look closely at aspects or issues within their own community, the structure included can be used with a variety of texts, photographs, objects, or artwork.

The Truth is Powerful

Watch this video from Self-Evident Media as it examines the creation and weaponization of race and tells the story of Sojourner Truth, a self-emancipated enslaved woman who later became a traveling preacher. The program closely analyzes the different versions of her famous speech given at an 1851 feminist anti-slavery meeting and stresses the need for Black stories to be told through a firsthand lens.
